Minikonsert: Kim Larsen (:Of the Wand and the Moon:)

Mens her hjemme kunne Odin-prester, innviet i runenes mystiske hemmeligheter, preke den norrøne gudelæras hellige kanon.

The Viking and Medieval Academic Film Club.

It's a Shame About Ray

Infamous B-movie and Drive-In director/producer/actor Ray Dennis Steckler [wiki] sadly died on January 7th, at 70. Movies like "The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-up Zombies" and "Rat Pfink A Boo Boo" were legendary just by their titles alone. Then try watching them ... Steckler's popularity grew enourmously for a while, after the 1986 publication of the book Incredibly Strange Films [Re/Search], in which he was profiled along with other obscure B- thru Z-grade low-budget backwoods auteurs.

From Dreadcentral: Psychotronic filmmaker Ray Dennis Steckler lost his battle with heart disease on January 7, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada; he was 70 years old. With his passing so goes Cash Flagg, his hoodlum alter ego and star of Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies, The Thrill Killers, Lemon Grove Kids Meet the Monsters and Wild Guitar. We also say farewell to Sven Christian, Wolfgang Schmidt, and Cindy Lou Sutters; other Steckler pseudonyms; there were 12 of them at last count and I am sure we will miss them all.

Steckler started his film career by finishing principal photography on Timothy Carey’s World’s Greatest Sinner. He then went on to capture Arch Hall Jr.’s delinquent delight in 1962's Wild Guitar, and after that he was off and running, shooting films without ever a finished screenplay in hand.

Steckler always did the best he could with what he had, which was sometimes practically nothing but his passion. When he got a hold of some Las Vegas showgirl garb, he decided to throw together what would be one of the first horror musicals, 1964's Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies, a complete non-sequester of a film, complete with dance numbers, feathers, glitz and the undead. To enhance Incredibly Strange Creatures... cinematic experience, "monsters" would run into the audience during key sequences, terrorizing the audience. Monsters 1, Audience 0.

Number Six, Your Time is Up

Patrick McGoohan [wiki] [imdb], writer and star of the cult TV series "The Prisoner" [wiki], has died at 80, on January 13th.

From BBC News:

He died in Los Angeles after a short illness, his film producer son-in-law Cleve Landsberg told Associated Press.

McGoohan played the character Six in the surreal 1960s show, filmed in the north Wales village of Portmeirion.

He won two Emmy awards for his work on TV detective series Columbo, playing different characters.

The first came for an episode of the series in 1974, with another 16 years later.

The screen star also won a Bafta award for best television actor in 1959 for his role in The Greatest Man In The World, a one-off drama in ITV's Armchair Theatre series.

In more recent years, McGoohan played King Edward Longshanks in the 1995 Mel Gibson film Braveheart. The actor also starred in ITV series Danger Man, which began in 1960.

The actor, who was born in New York and raised in England and Ireland, came to screen prominence in TV series Danger Man, in which he played a secret service agent. The programme later aired as Secret Agent in the US.

He was later considered for the role of James Bond for the movie Dr No.

But McGoohan was chiefly associated with cult ITV drama The Prisoner, writing some of the episodes himself under a different name. His character spent the entire time attempting to escape from The Village and finding out the identity of his captor, the elusive Number One. He repeatedly declared: "I am not a number - I am a free man!"

In 2000, McGoohan reprised his most famous role in an episode of The Simpsons.

Ron Asheton dies at 60

Sadly, the legendary guitarist and founder member of The Stooges, Ron Asheton, died a few days ago.

From The Guardian:

The Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton has been found dead at his home in Michigan. He was 60.

Police told Ann Arbor News that the musician may have been dead for several days before he was found. Although unconfirmed, initial signs indicate that Asheton died of a heart attack.

Asheton was one of the founding members of the Stooges, along with his brother Scott, bassist Dave Alexander and their charismatic frontman Iggy Pop. With Pop, Asheton helped write songs that would set the template for punk rock, including No Fun and I Wanna Be Your Dog. As befits a band from Ann Arbor, their music distilled the experience of being a bored suburban teen and bottled it as a furious and snarling sonic assault. Their feral take on rock'n'roll, full of feedback and clatter, was the perfect backdrop for Pop's wild stage antics, another big influence for punk performers.

Bill Landis dies at 49

Bill Landis, editor of Sleazoid Express and author of the book of the same title, died of a heart attack just before christmas. I interviewed Landis and his co-writer/editor wife Michelle Clifford for the UK book "Creeping Flesh" a few years ago. His paper "Sleazoid Express" was revived as a 70-80 page zine, and he put out 6 excellent issues, plus one special issue on "Bloodsucking Freaks" director Joel M. Reed, and a "monograph" called "30 Years on the Deuce: The Wicked Die Slow". His Sleazoid book is also a very unique piece of film history. Also, his very unauthorized biography of Kenneth Anger, "ANGER", is strongly recommended.

Landis worked in and around the grindhouse theaters and the fringes of the film business for years, and presented a detailed insider's view of New York's 42nd street area. He was often imitated but never duplicated. He will be missed by film fans all over the world.
