Joe Coleman invades Germany Last year he took Manhattan, with his first solo exhibition there in 19 years, now he takes Berlin. This just in from Whitney Ward:
Joe Coleman: Internal Digging
Opening: Saturday, May 26, 2007, 5 - 10 pm. Dates: May 27 - August 19, 2007.
The exhibition Internal Digging at KW Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin will be the first ever to encompass all aspects of Joe Coleman's work.
"When I start a painting I have no idea how the whole image is going to be. But that's what's exciting to me. I have no sketches and I'm not predicting the composition. It is a digging process." (Joe Coleman in R.I.P., Rest in Pieces, A Portrait of Joe Coleman, a film by Robert Pejo, 1997)
Joe Coleman (born 1955) paints, draws, performs, and collects. His obsessive work includes panel paintings, comic strips, performances, and a total installation, all related to each other in a complex web of mutual referencing. Fully exploiting the possibilities inherent in these diverse artistic media, Coleman explores and combines the compositional principles of icon painting, the mostly invisible knowledge of the American underground, and numerous images quoted "verbatim" from all areas of image production. The resulting complexity gives rise to an idiosyncratic and dense visual cosmos. Bikers, serial killers, hillbillies, escape artists, and elephant men, curiosities from our collective fairground memories, the wretched and the walking wounded are the actors in his pandemonium. They are the subjects and the objects of Coleman's real and visual worlds.
For more than thirty years his apartment in Brooklyn has been growing into a space full of relics, specimens, documents, and oddities. As an important aspect of his work he continually rearranges and reorganizes this rich chamber of marvels, which he calls his odditorium - at once source of inspiration and verifiable reference.
The painter, performance artist and musician Joe Coleman was born in Norwalk (CT) in 1955 and today lives and works in Brooklyn (NY). His time at the School of Visual Art, New York, in 1976 was no more than a brief episode. He staged his first performance in 1972 (start of the Party Explosions series). Largely self-taught in the fields of painting and drawing, he began creating illustrated stories and comic strips which he published himself (e.g. The Mystery of Woolverine Woo-bait, 1982). His paintings only gained a wider public when the Victoria and Albert Museum in London acquired one of his pictures for its collection in 1987. Participation in an exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 2001 and an exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2007 followed.
Internal Digging is the first European exhibition to show all aspects of Coleman's work. Apart from paintings and drawings, the show will also feature films and performances and - for the first time ever - give Joe Coleman an opportunity to present substantial parts of the odditorium to the public. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue with an interview with Joe Coleman and further texts.
The exhibition is curated by Susanne Pfeffer.

Dear Friends,
Coney Island USA's biggest party yet is coming next week! You've heard about us in the news, you love what we do, you want to see it in Manhattan. JOIN US!
Mermaid Parade 25th Anniversary Celebration -- April 27, 2007, 7-11PM --Studio Mezmor (Formerly Crobar) -- 530 W. 28th St. -- $100, $250 and $500 tickets are available. -- Get your Tickets Here!
It's a Celebration!
This year is the 25th Anniversary of the Mermaid Parade. It's a big year for us, and we want our friends to join us to celebrate our triumphs in spite of the major challenges facing us in the years ahead. One of our board members put it best in a recent letter: "things are really great at the world's most interesting not-for profit arts organization...." In spite of all the turmoil in the neighborhood, we've been making sure that we'll be able to do keep the spirit and feeling of Coney Island alive for at least another 25 years. With help from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, we're purchasing our historic building and we'll have a permanent home in New York's amusement district!!
So join us to kick off the summer season in style and start building the energy that will drive us to a monumental 25th anniversary parade! The first parade organized and run from our own property in Coney Island! Come celebrate with us!
It's a Fundraiser!
This year, we expect to fund a significant portion of our annual operating expenses with this event. Your ticket matters. Sure, there are other parties. Some of them could be Coney Island Themed. But we're your resident carnies and we need you. We promise to make it worth your while.
It's a heck of a party!
Seriously, folks, this will be one of the best parties you've ever been to. Our annual benefit is a one of a kind event where we pull out all the stops and reach deep inside our bag of tricks to create a happening like no other. Last year the event featured everything from the full Mermaid Parade in miniature marching around the club (complete with a charismatic Dwarf leading the performers) to burlesque aerialists to myriad freaks to a miniature hot dog eating contest, and more. This year, we'll be taking the party to new heights. The highlight will be Dick Zigun (our founder) taking on British TV-star and seal-boy Mat Fraser in a push-up contest.
Featuring entertainment by Miss Coney Island Ekaterina, Julie Atlas Muz, the Coney Island Sideshow, Amanda Topaz and Rockit Aerials, Armen Ra, Shelly Watson, The Great Throwdini, Bambi the Mermaid, The Great Fredini, Todd Robbins, Fisherman's Xylophonic Burlesque Orchestra, DJ Jeff Jackson, and more! Don't be square!
ALSO... when you get your tickets consider upgrading to the VIP or Dinner level admission. With the VIP ticket you get exclusive access to a private area at the Gala with special entertainment, table service and more. Or really go for it and join our board and perfromers as both a VIP guest at the Gala and as celebrant at the annual Sideshow Social Club Dinner. The Dinner is a unique event on May 2nd, where you get to dine in Manhattan with the freaks, wonders and curiosities of Coney Island. It's a very special opportunity to get up close and personal with some folks who you may not meet in your every day life. You'll have stories to tell for years to come.
You probably go to a few parties and benefits throughout the year, but trust us when we say that ours is special. Sure, you'll be supporting a noble cause...but that's nothing new. When you come to the Coney Island Gala you'll get to experience a once-in-a-lifetime, remarkable spectacular where you'll be hard pressed to take the smile off your face.

Velkommen!

My brother's got a brand new blogLately I've been reading a lot of music blogs. Not necessarily to download a lot of tunes, more to read about people's favourite records and look at cover scans. My friend NXP links to a lot of really good blogs on his own Paranoia is Freedom.
Last weekend my brother started a music blog, and he's been very active, uploading new stuff every day, sometimes several times a day. The music is stored at Megaupload and RapidShare and will go away if a file is not downloaded by anyone for 90 days. Go visit Bruunski Beats for a giant load of garage rock, Stooges, punk, (true) metal, Kiss and a rare Knutsen & Ludvigsen tribute album. As with most music blogs, the material is mostly very obscure, rare, hard to find or not commercially available at all. Later on, he will post a lot of unreleased Henry Rollins spoken word shows from our collections of tapes and CD-R's from the last 20 years. One show from Belgium 1990 is already up.
On the right side there's a list of links cherry-picked from the giant Mammoth list of 900+ blogs mentioned in an earlier post below. I'm fascinated by people's intense enthusiasm for obscure jazz, 80's industrial tapes, thrift store finds or eccentric christmas songs (which I also collect). Many, many treasures to be found.
Also, check out my brother's weekly radio show TRAKTOR at MySpace and the official TRAKTOR site. Free podcasts are available from iTunes Music Store.
