Hit the showers!

Robin Bougie slaps us all around the head with a new glorious issue of CINEMA SEWER (#18). This is a special theme issue, ALL on Women In Prison (WIP) films, or "Girls in Prison" as it says on the cover. It's a down & dirty sleaze-o-rama of soapy shower scenes and semi-coerced sado-lesbianism behind bars. Bars of soap.

As The Bougieman so classily puts it: "So climb on board, stamp your feet, and pull your underwear out of the crack in your ass -- because the world of smutty, exploitational film is once again flipped over on its back and dissected with an butter knife!"

The new issue includes:

• A mind-melting boneriffic cover by the always outstanding BRANDON GRAHAM!

• Bougie provides a exhaustively-researched history (It took a year to compile) of the early years of the Women-In-Prison (WIP) genre, with mouthwatering illustrations by the awesome Kaz Strzepek!

• A 5 page ode to the 4 FEMALE CONVICT SCORPION movies starring Meiko Kaji! With 4 gorgeous illustrations by Joseph Bergin the Third!

• A saucy look at the real-life realities of life in prison for females, as opposed to the world the inhabit in the jails onscreen.

• A massive sticky wad of full length reviews for films like, SWAMP WOMEN, THE FIFTH FLOOR, GIRL ON A CHAIN GANG, SWEET SUGAR, SAVAGE SISTERS, STRIKE OF THE TORTURED ANGELS, A VERY SPECIAL PRISON FOR WOMEN, GIRLS RIOT, WOMEN OF CELL BLOCK 7 a.k.a. "Diario segreto da un carcere femminile", STRANGER INSIDE, WOMEN'S PRISON MASSACRE a.k.a. "Emanuelle fuga dall'inferno", starring Laura Gemser, THE CONCRETE JUNGLE, and many more!

• Sinister Sam pays tribute to Eurotrash star Monica Swinn, and her Warden roles in WIP classics such as BARBED WIRE DOLLS, and HELLTRAIN.

• Finely rendered full page comic book reviews devoted to WOMEN IN FURY, ESCAPE FROM HELL HOLE, as well as the WIP pulp novels FEMALE CONVICT, and PRISON GIRL! You'll drool and moan as your eyes ooze shit from sheer excitement! Art by Bougie, Bergin, Ryan Pequin, Precilla Equis, and Phil B.!

• An amazing overview of the Roger Corman produced Filipino Chicks-in-chains movies, such as BIG DOLL HOUSE, WOMEN IN CAGES, THE BIG BIRD CAGE, all three starring Pam Grier, and THE HOT BOX.

• A festival diary of the Vancouver CINEMUERTE film fest, and SO MUCH MORE! You can't consider yourself a fan of the genre and miss this!

This whole groin-load of hand-written, hand-illustrated fun is available for only $4 + postage to your decrepit area. Also, don't short-change yourself and miss out on the mind-bending CINEMA SEWER 2006 CALENDAR (see cover here), and the spastic fit-inducing RETARD-O-TRON VIDEO MIXTAPE dvd, a comp. disc even more unhinged than the more well known Lost & Found and TV Carnage series. Email Bougie and ask for prices and availability.

I also have a few back issues in stock, incl. some that Bougie is running out of. Email me (address at the top of the site here) for info and prices.

China attacks! And the neo-cons con you!

I've read Paranoia magazine since the start, but they seem to be getting more and more speculative, metaphysical and nutty.

In the latest, issue 40, you can find these articles:

Wandering Planets by Scott Corrales, Psychologizing by Andrea Runyan, NASA Cover-up in Space by Joseph Gutheinz, The Four Horsemen of Oil by Dean Henderson, China's Plan to Destroy America by Al Hidell, Hartford Van Dyke and the Pearl Harbor Story by Joan d'Arc, The Alien is Under Construction by Colin Bennett, A Neo-Con Counter-Conspiracy by Will Banyan, The Underground Mystery of the Dero by Jack Grimes, and Alien Medical Interview -- Dr. Roger Leir. Investigate at your own peril.

Other conspiracy/para-political magazines and book distributors:

Marc presents freaks, dwarves and bearded ladies

Marc Hartzman is the editor of BACKWASH zine, a great read if you're into the weird end of pop culture as well as dwarves and sideshow people. He has now let his freak interest blossom into a big hardcover book on Tarcher Penguin, "American Sideshow -- An Encyclopedia of History's Most Wondrous and Curiously Strange Performers". From the shot of Johnny Eck and his brother on the front to the Saman Siamese Twins on the back cover, we are treated to a 290 page A thru Z of historic performers -- and a few current performers lodged in the back of the book.

All the celebrities are here, like Tom Thumb, Chang & Eng, Prince Randian the living torso (as seen in "Freaks"), the siamese twins Ronnie and Donnie Galyon, fat lady Dolly Dimples (there's a norwegian pizza chain named after her!) and a couple hundred more, including many that I've never heard of before. There are also entries on other things, like a chapter on Gibsonton, the sideshow performers retreat town in Florida. The entrepreneurs, like Ward Hall and Bobby Reynolds, are also included. Most entries are of course illustrated, as this is a business of mainly visual thrills.

The revival of interest in sideshows in the 90's came in the brink of time, as many veteran performers were growing very old. Writers and filmmakers documenting the history of this branch of entertainment managed to get a lot of stories and information first hand from many of the main players, before a whole lot of them sadly passed away in recent years.

This is a neat package, a fun introduction for newcomers to sideshow culture, and a handy reference book for hardened fans who's been studying this phenomena for decades.

On top of all this, Marc is a very nice guy too. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the very first Sideshow Gathering in Wilkes-Barre in 2002. Check out this event if you're in the US in the fall. Marc also wrote the book "Found on eBay" about cheap and funny objects he picked up from the world's largest yard sale.

For chronicles of sideshow culture, also check out James Taylor's Shocked & Amazed series of books. If you're in NYC, don't pass up the opportunity to see the Coney Island Sideshow.

A Bloodsucking Freak -- in more ways than one!

Bill Landis has a special edition of Sleazoid Express out. It's all dirt on the notorious director Joel M. Reed, the human blob behind the demented classic sadist torture show "The Great Torture Show" a.k.a. "BLOODSUCKING FREAKS".

Landis always writes from personal experience, from his years of living in NYC and working as a projectionist and theatre manager at some of the legendary sleaze-pits around Times Square/42nd St., known as "The Deuce". But this time around it's even more personal, as Landis once started a company with Reed, with the intent to distribute and/or produce exploitation films for fun and profit. But Reed turned out to be a professional scammer, collecting cash from potential investors, and just spending it on himself, never getting close to either making or distributing so much as a frame of film. There are plenty of sordid stories and details along the way. I strongly recommend this zine to all cult film fans. As well as all back issues, and all issues of Michelle Clifford's METASEX, and their joint project, the SLEAZOID BOOK.

Check out Joel M. Reed's minimal, 11 year old web site. Reed also made "Night of the Zombies", a terminally boring piece of crap starring porn actor Jamie Gillis, who is a fairly good actor, but doesn't get to show much of it in this travesty. The whole thing takes place in utter darkness and nothing much at all happens. Makes "Robot Monster" and "The Beast of Yucca Flats" look like action-packed classics. Joe Bob Briggs' review of "Bloodsucking Freaks". Discussion about Reed's "Blood Bath".

The latest issue of Carbon 14 (#27) also features writing by Bill & Michelle. Bill writes about "They Call Her One-Eye" a.k.a. "Thriller -- a Cruel Film" (I interviewed the director for Creeping Flesh and Cinema Sewer) and Michelle gives an overview of the life and flawed career of character actor/drunk Joe Spinell. Also a free CD of bands from Arizona + articles on Rudy Ray Moore, norwegian band Gluecifer and tons of columns and reviews of cult films and raunchy music.
