Cult Awareness...

Heaven's Gate still exists, you can find them here. The Church of Scientology is also alive and well, spouting L. Ron Hubbard's madcap philosophies. Their website fails to mention any money changing hands... Charles Manson claimed to be a "theta clear", an awareness so high that L. Ron said that not even Jesus or Buddha were all the way there. The all-mighty J.R. "Bob" Dobbs still reign supreme in the Church of the SubGenius. Their Heaven's Gate/"Bob"/Hell's Gate connection stuff is here. Be warned -- this is perhaps the most dense and sprawling, chaotic and gigantic website on the whole internet!!! Many years of writings and graphics keeps accumulating. Jeez. I still haven't read all of the Book of the SubGenius that I bought 13 years ago... Get your membership before XX-day (not to be confused with X-day) comes around. If you want to be an ordained minister elsewhere, contact the Universal Life Church. Their hype goes: Become ordained here today and begin your own ministry! As a legally ordained minister, you may perform weddings, funerals, baptisms and other functions of the clergy.

US Corporate Welfare

This story comes from AlterNet:

According to our leaders, we are not supposed to let the war on terror disrupt our normal lives. And, to their credit, they're leading by example.

For instance, far from the war disrupting the House's normal run of shameless corporate toadying, it's enhancing it. Indeed, it's giving our leaders cover to put forward their answer to each and every problem America faces: a massive corporate giveaway. And they even have the gall to call it patriotism. Others, using the English language more rigorously, call it war profiteering.

The so-called economic stimulus package that passed the House last week would have been scurrilous in times of prosperity. But in this time of national crisis it is, quite simply, grotesque.

The grisly details include a retroactive elimination of the corporate alternative minimum tax and a 10 percent cut in the capital gains tax. And on the other side of the Capitol, the Senate Republicans are proposing an acceleration of all the top-bracket tax cuts and a return of that old favorite, the fully tax-deductible three-martini lunch.

The House package is little more than a rehashed corporate wish list, doling out $115 billion in tax breaks to big business and the wealthiest taxpayers, and a comparatively measly $14 billion to poor and moderate-income families in the form of tax rebates and unemployment benefits. And while the tax cuts for the haves are permanent, those for the have-nots are good for only one year.

What's more, the money given to corporate America is given without conditions -- not tax credits tied to investments, but handouts more likely to end up in CEOs' Christmas bonuses than back in the economy.

All you really need to know about the true nature of this bill can be found in a largely unnoticed provision that makes permanent a gaping tax loophole that was about to expire. It allows multinational corporations such as GE and Ford to avoid paying taxes by shifting profits to their offshore subsidiaries -- but only if those profits remain overseas. Tell me, how exactly is providing incentives to keep money out of our economy supposed to stimulate our economy?

The House bill is so outrageous that even some top GOP officials are balking. In a rare slip from the party line, Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill colorfully criticized it as "show business." Rep. Greg Ganske, R-Iowa, one of seven Republicans who voted against the bill, labeled it "an early Christmas card" for "already profitable corporations." And the president's budget director, Mitch Daniels, informed the nation in a poetic outburst that "the corral gates" have been blown open and "the animals are running loose."

The galloping beasts in this case are corporate lobbyists and their chums on the Hill, Dick Armey and Tom DeLay chief among them.

The juiciest goodie in this box of corporate bon-bons, the retroactive repeal of the corporate alternative minimum tax, will lead to $25 billion in instant corporate rebate checks to needy companies such as IBM (slated to get $1.4 billion), GM ($833 million) and GE ($671 million).

Of the $25 billion refund, over $6.3 billion will be given to just 14 corporations. Not surprisingly, these 14 lucky winners have been regular and generous political donors. Over the last 10 years, they've poured almost $15 million in soft money into the national committees of both parties. It turns out that may be the smartest investment they've ever made.

Such a blatant quid pro quo is so indefensible that the main champions of the grandly named Economic Security and Recovery Act aren't even trying very hard to justify it. Take Armey's wan effort on "Meet the Press." There he was, half-heartedly trying to convince Tim Russert that we need these massive tax cuts because the last round of massive tax cuts were not geared to stimulating the economy. Really? Wasn't that him at a House subcommittee hearing back in March, selling the last tax cut bill as "just the shot in the arm that this economy needs"?

Armey then offered us all a lecture on how big corporate giveaways are the best way to create new jobs. Unfortunately, the facts don't bear him out. The $15 billion Congress just handed the airline industry hasn't kept it from laying off 140,000 workers.

Armey also called enhanced unemployment benefits "a feeble response" and not "commensurate with the American spirit." He went on to promise that the new stimulus package "will create 170,000 new jobs next year alone." Not exactly the most heartening news to the 7.8 million people currently unemployed in the country. What are the 7.63 million left on the sidelines supposed to do, sit around and cross their fingers, hoping one or two of the lucky 170,000 will eventually rub their new bosses the wrong way? Is that more in keeping with the American spirit?

It's time to declare war on war profiteering. But we'll need political leaders able to dramatize the betrayal of the public trust this bill represents.

Maybe there are too many numbers with too many zeros to draw the public's attention away from the latest "general alert" issued by the attorney general. So let's forget the numbers and focus on the moving story of good overcoming evil. Let history record that, after Sept. 11, our leaders brought the nation together and decided to fight the war on terrorism by making business lunches fully tax-deductible and levying no taxes on corporate profits patriotically funneled off shore. Call it Operation Enduring Avarice.

It's enough to put a lump in your throat.

My shadows are running fast...

After a year or two of anticipation, Adam Gorightly's book "The Shadow Over Santa Susana -- Black Magic, Mind Control and the 'Manson Family' Mythos" is finally out. It traces the story of Charles Manson and the "Family", covering some new, conspiratorial ground and tries to puzzle together theories earlier launced by the severely misguided and spelling-challenged Bill Nelson and in Maury Terry's Manson vs. Son of Sam epic novel-like "The Ultimate Evil". Gorightly seems to have less of a moral axe to grind, and is willing to search for possible truths from any available source, thus bringing together one of the most comprehensive Manson books ever written. The many years that have passed since '69 also seems to help put the events in a slightly more "sane" perspective. The book could have used more illustrations and an index, though. He seems to have produced the whole book from his desk. I would think that living in California, he would've had the opportunity to talk face-to-face with a few of the people involved and/or other Manson researchers. But he does use quite a few sources never utilized in any earlier Manson books. Like David Black's excellent "Acid -- The Secret History of LSD" and personal correspondence with conspiracy researchers Jim Keith and John Judge. Judge thinks that both Jonestown and the Manson Family were parts of CIA's MKULTRA mind control program.

If you're only gonna read a few Manson books, I would strongly recommend that this one is among them, along with Bugliosi's self-congratulatory tome "Helter Skelter" and Ed Sanders' groundbreaking "The Family: The Story of Charles Manson's Dune Buggy Attack Battalion". Fanatics should also seek out Bill Nelson's "Manson -- Behind the Scenes". Nelson's moral crusade seems mostly driven by jealousy over the fact that Manson and Watson got so much young pussy back in their heyday. Nelson himself is convicted of statutory rape, and his mansonmurders.com website seems to have disappeared after this became a widely known fact. However, when writing his books, he hauled his old ass all around and talked to a lot of people, some of which had never come forward before. Thus he uncovered a lot of new information that was added to the Manson saga. Some of it was not very important though. Nelson is a bad self-editor and an even worse speller. His books have 10-15 typos per page... Another book worthy of attention is Nikolas Schreck's "The Manson File" from '88, which for the first time made public som rare Manson poetry, drawings and stories. With strong contributions from co-editors Boyd Rice, John Aes-Nihil and Nick Bougas. If you're only gonna read a single book on the case, John Gilmore & Ron Kenner's "Garbage People" is a pretty good choice. Get a reprint titled "Manson: The Unholy Trail of Charlie and the Family" from Amok Press. To get other rare Manson books, go to the Archives of Aesthetic Nihilism.

OK, back to "The Shadow Over Santa Susana": The sales blurb on Gorightly's Manson Mythos home page goes: It was over thirty years ago today that Charlie taught the band to play ... Unfortunately the tune they were playing blared bad karma feedback from the amplifiers of their minds. In The Shadow Over Santa Susana author Adam Gorightly takes his readers on a black magic carpet ride from the Hollywood "Beautiful People" scene of the late 60's through to the vast desert landscapes of a Death Valley gone mad—with all the love-ins and creepy-crawls that happened along the way. One of the leading luminaries of contemporary high strangeness, Adam Gorightly lets loose with his own unique riff on Charlie and his Family, in all their blazing gory. Buy this book and blow your mind!

About himself, Adam writes: A self-described “crackpot historian”, Adam Gorightly’s eclectic brand of journalism has appeared in such groundbreaking ‘zines as The Excluded Middle, Crash Collusion, UFO Magazine, Paranoia, SteamShovel Press, Great God Pan, Off The Deep End, The Hungry Maggot, Gray Areas, Infocult, ELF-Infested Spaces, Dagobert’s Revenge and Saucer Smear. His work can also be found on the Internet at such websites as Magonia, Donna Kossy’s Kooks, The Konformist, and Disinformation. Unpublished works include a novella, Dusty Karma -- that has been described as Philip K. Dick meets the Kennedy Assassination--as well as his samizdat classic UFO’s, LSD and Me, which appeared in a condensed version in Crash Collusion # 5.

Extra: An article by Tim Madison from Primal Chaos that compares Manson to the Hindu God Shiva.

The Human Blockhead dies at 94

Nov. 8th, the sideshow performer Melvin Burkhart died in a hospice in Sun City, Florida. Known as the inventor of the human blockhead act, he hammered huge nails into his nose in thousands of locations. He performed at the 1939 World's fair, countless dusty midways, andm last month, in an off-Broadway theater. He was also a sword swallower, he could breathe with one lung at a time, make different expressions with the two halves of his face, rotate his stomach in an act he called "the cement mixer", he survived an electric chair, wrestled with snakes and performed magic. He was one of the foremost sideshow performers of the 20th century. His career started in the 1930's and was active throughout the 90's. For many years Melvin was the inside talker for the sideshow traveling with the James E. Strates Carnival (America's Largest). Melvin also worked for Ripley's Odditorium and finished his career at the Coney Island Circus Sideshow from 1986-1990. He lived in Gibtown, Florida and is survived by his wife Joyce.

Judas Kiss

The UK music zine Judas Kiss has its seventh issue out. The mag focuses on industrial and "apocalyptic folk" music, and has features on Von Thronstahl, The Days of the Trumpet Call, Midnight Syndicate, B'nai Brith, Remanence and Middle Pillar Records. There's also a live report from a concert with Der Blutharsch, and long reviews of the latest Death in June and Boyd Rice & Fiends albums, as well as a review section with shorter cd reviews. They visit the Thailand Vegetarian festival, where a lot of self-torture goes on, and they interview a female submissive. The article with most promise is "Death of the West", on the always ripe subject of industrial music and its fascination with fascist imagery and ideology. Sadly, the article ends before it really goes anywhere. The beginning states that DIJ and others can't really run away from their imagery and lyrics, and then abruptly concluding that all their critics are jumping to conclusions much too fast.... To get the mag, contact editor Lee Powell at judaskiss@freezone.co.uk

Psychotronic.com

The latest issue of Psychotronic Video (#35) has interviews with Paul Koslo ("The Omega Man"), Tom Desimone ("The Concrete Jungle"), Maxwell Caulfield ("The Boy Next Door"). Niels Solberg, who has interviewed Greta Gynt and Julie Ege for Psychotronic before, has talked to Anna-Lisa Ruud (b. 1932), a norwegian actress who went to Hollywood and starred in Three Stooges movies and the western series "Bonanza". And many other movies, tv shows and plays. When she got back to Norway nobody believed that she had had a career in Hollywood, because none of the stuff she was in was shown in Norway. And now, 40 years after, people still haven't heard of her! Although "Bonanza" runs on tv now. Psychotronic now has a WEB PAGE. Check it out! Most of it is still under construction, but it has great potential as more articles and the mail order store for movie books are developed. Michael Weldon has put together a 2 hour video tape ("Mondo Psychotronic") of his TV show appearances, various music videos, film clips and home videos from back when he had a store in Manhattan. He now lives in Virginia with his wife Mia, and runs a video rental store. He wants to trade stuff to get original VHS NTSC tapes for his store.

Movie madness

The swedish Violent Vision website has a lot of great movie-related articles, interviews and reviews. Among the best are the Mondo movies department, and the interview with the touring rare film print collector Jack Stevenson.
Also, all cult film fanatics should go to Stevenson's own site here. Stevenson wrote and edited the zine/book series Pandemonium, and more recently the books "Fleshpot" on sex films and "Addicted" on drug films, as well as countless articles in stacks of film zines. He lives in Denmark and is the world's biggest expert on Bodil Jensen, the danish animal porn star.
If you're into sleaze/cult/horror/sex movies from the past, the legendary Sleazoid Express zine by the former 42nd Street projectionist/sleaze cinema manager Bill Landis is an absolute must. His wife Michelle Clifford puts out the equally impressive Metasex with detailed reports on the sex film actors, producers and theatres back in the day before the Disney company bought the whole street and shut down all the fun. Bill Landis is the author of the excellent and very revealing Kenneth Anger biography "Anger". Coming next year is a book collection of old Sleazoid articles.

Music For Pussycats

This just in from Soleilmoon: BOYD RICE PRESENTS: MUSIC FOR PUSSYCATS Various Artists CD $9.99. 12 tracks that will make you want to pillow talk all night long. Total running time: 28.47
What we know of any culture or civilization ultimately comes down to what survives. Objects made of stronger materials, or objects in wider general usage are what usually seem to be left behind. And it's a shame. For every epoch whose crown jewels are preserved, we no doubt have thousands of chamber pots. In other words, we don't know those things which may have been most interesting about past eras, yet we're well acquainted with those things which may have been the most base or common. And so it is with pop music. For every song in endless rotation on oldies stations, there are thousands of others (some hits, some not) that we'll never hear again. These are a few of those songs. And my intention in compiling this CD is that I felt these songs deserve to survive, to be preserved. These songs literally constitute the soundtrack of my life, going back to age 16 or perhaps earlier. It never ceases to amaze me that when I encounter aficionados of girl pop, none of them have ever heard of singers like Robbie Winston, Susan Rafey, Diane Ray, or most of the others on this comp-all women who I feel have contributed works equal (if not superior) to the best the genre has to offer. These singers, and the songs they've recorded, have long occupied a special place in my heart. And the knowledge that I was listening to songs that virtually no one else seemed to know of, afforded me a peculiar kind of thrill. A mentor of mine once told me that the power of forgotten music, is that when you're perhaps the only person in the world listening to it, it's as though it's yours alone. Consequently, the experience of something magical becomes ever more magical. For going on 25 years, I've shared these songs with everyone close to me, all the while wishing that everyone interested in this type of music could be exposed to them. As much as I loved keeping these songs more or less to myself, I always had an odd sort of melancholy that they were never the huge hits I'd felt they deserved to be. In a better world each of these songs would have been a chart-topper, and the girls who sang them still playing sold out concerts in Vegas. I've spent years trying to track down some of these singers, and even the more well known among them (such as Priscilla Paris) seem to have vanished into thin air. But I didn't want their memory-or music-to vanish, so I compiled this CD as a sort of tribute to them. They, and others like them, may have missed out on the glory and rewards that they so sorely deserved; yet they created something uniquely enduring and endearing. And it deserves to endure. So I share it here with you, dear listener... --Boyd Rice

In a radio interview with evangelist Bob Larson's show "Talk-Back", Tracy Twyman reveals that she believes all of european royalty to be related to Dagobert II, the last of the Frankish dynasty of Priest-Kings known as the Merovingians. He was related to Jesus Christ, but the bloodline can also be traced back to space aliens, and some myhical bull-fish sea creature called Quinotaur. Boyd Rice tells us that he traced his own heritage back to the Merovingians and thus also to Jesus Christ. If any of this should have any base in reality, JC must have climbed down from the cross and fathered children (with Mary Magdalen, presumably). Their descendants intermarried with what became the Royal House of France. Other researchers still differ on the question of whether Christ was an actual historical figure or not. The basis for the Dagobert's Revenge magazine, however, can be found in the theories presented in the 1980 cult book "Holy Blood, Holy Grail", by Michael Baigent, Henry Lincoln, and Richard Leigh.

Long Live Death!

If you're looking for info on the noise artist Boyd Rice/NON, the main place to go is the Long Live Death website. Gathered here are countless interviews, articles, updated discographies, a historical timeline, and much more. The new cd by Boyd Rice and Fiends, "Wolfpact" (see photo), made with Douglas P.(Death In June) and Albin Julius (Der Blutharsch) is well worth hearing, although it seems like they're running out of ideas halway through it. Check out Kevin Slaughter's "mother-site" to Long Live Death!, the The Den of Inequity. Great shop w/satanic books, records, magazines et.c. Boyd's video "Black Sun" is available from this site. It's a short film of rotating swastikas and a noise soundtrack. The 2 hour video collection "The Many Moods of Boyd Rice" is also out. It contains scenes from the movie “Pearls Before Swine”, various television appearances, exclusive video from the NON/Der Blutharsch/Death In June European tour of 1998, short films and more. Less shaky-cam footage visiting Mussolini souvenir shops in Italy and more tv appearances, music clips and interviews would have made this release a much more bearable thing to watch.

The real film noir

The Blaxploitation genre has had a renaissance in the last few years, with the remake of "Shaft", and Tarantino's movie "Jackie Brown". Pam Grier, who was in "Jackie Brown", has had some of her 70's films like "Coffy" & "Foxy Brown" pulled out of obscurity. Richard "Shaft" Roundtree & Fred Williamson have enjoyed new fame, honour & glory thru re-release of old movies on dvd, and bit parts in new ones. In the book "Blaxploitation Films" Mikel J. Koven tries to give a historical overview in the course of 100 pages. So, who's getting exploited in these movies? Blacks are often stereotyped as pimps and drug dealers, while being cool and in control at the same time. They're not necessarily arrested or killed, unless they have sex with white women. Then chances are that it'll all turn to shit at some point. These movies were made to get blacks into cinemas, but at the same time one had to be careful not to alienate a potentially large audience of whites. A delicate balance. Most of the movies had white producers and directors who only tried to cash in on any trend that was going. Some movies by black directors, like Melvin Van Peebles' "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" (1971) tried to make a political point of the fact that blacks often got harassed by the police and other authorities. However, the main focus remained on stuffing the movies with as much sex & violence as possible. (The more talented son of Melvin, Mario Von Peebles, made the movies "New Jack City", "Posse"& "Panther" in the 90's.) When all else had been tried, attempts were made to cross blaxploitation with horror, the result being curiosities like "Blacula" (1972) & "Blackenstein" (1973). You'll find this book on the film shelf in large bookstores, or go here.

steamshovelpress.com US Intelligence might not be behind the Sept. 11th attacks, but chances are they knew about it, and still let it happen, the way many researchers think the Oklahoma bombing went down. What few draconian police state laws that were turned down back then, are now in place, with 98 votes to one in the US Congress, and not much public debate to speak of. On the slightest suspicion, anyone's email, phones or bank accounts can be looked into. Foreign citizens can be detained for a week with no charges. What used to be legal political activism, the right to gather peacefully, the right to speak one's mind and the right to demonstrate, might in the future be viewed as a terrorist threat and deemed illegal. Chainsaws and nipple belts

After 27 years on the loose. 69 year old Robert Kleasen has admitted to the chainsaw murders of Gary Daley (20) and Mark Fischer (19) in Travis County, Texas. The corpses were found in october '74, and the case is rumoured to have inspired the movie "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". Another inspiration for that film, the Plainfield, Wisconsin serial killer, cross-dresser, necrophile and cannibal Ed Gein, has recently had a new movie made about his life. Steve Railsback (known for playing Charles Manson in the '74 tv movie "Helter Skelter") plays Ed. Check out flash trailer w/sound on http://www.edgeinthemovie.com Ed Geins life story also inspired the films "Deranged" ('74), Psycho ('60) and The Silence of the Lambs ('91).

Paranoid?

The latest 60 page issue (#27) of the Providence, Rhode Island conspiracy theory/parapolitics mag Paranoia has articles on the Chilean goatsucking cryptozoology monster the Chupacabras possibly being a NASA genetic experiment, Sci-fi authors like Robert Heinlein and Kennedy advisor Paul Linebarger using their novels as tools of propaganda, and Alan Cantwell Jr., M.D. on aids being a man-made disease. The "Disclosure Project" fights for getting the government to admit that aliens already are here among us. If the terrorists hadn't come along, we would maybe have seen Bush arguing by now that his Star Wars project could be used defending the earth from space aliens attacking -- The "Independence Day" scenario... Darrel Sims talks about alien implants, and finally there's a piece on hypnosis and mind control.

Now they know that I know that they're watching me...

Recently my webpage HWEB had 9 visits from "USA Military" and "USA Government". It could be some bored office clerks surfing the web for their own pleasure, but I've never seen these names before from reading the statistics every week for more than a year. My suspicion is that while hunting for terrorists, they've checked the web for info on everyone that has ever been in touch with the Secret Service (SS). At HWEB, there's an article on Boyd Rice, who tried to give Betty Ford a skinned sheep head back in the seventies. The SS thought he was a lunatic, took him in and questioned him at length. There's also an interview with Michael Moynihan, who had a visit from the SS while sharing a flat with Rice in Denver in the early 90's. They claimed that MM had planned to assassinate then president Bush (sr.), along with Charles Manson and the Manson girls Sandra Good and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme. Of course, no such plot ever existed. Here's excerpts from some of the web statistics:
October 1st to 7th:

2: .fi (Finland)
2: .mil (USA Military)
2: .sg (Singapore)

I have 3 guidelines when it comes to paranoia:
1. I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid enough?
2. Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you.
3. A paranoid is someone who knows what's really going on. (WS Burroughs)

Conspiracy 101

Conspiracy Theories by Robin Ramsay (£3.99, 96 pp, ISBN: 1903047307, Pocket Essentials, 2000) When the publisher of "The Essential Library" wanted a book on conspiracy theories for their "ideas" series they contacted the most down-to-earth of all writers in the field. Robin Ramsay is the editor of the long-running zine Lobster. Ramsay brushes off most of the UFO-speculations as sci-fi and disinformation, and concentrates mostly on what he calls "parapolitics" - documented conspiracies by real people trying to gain power and money through non-parlamentarian methods. Ramsay was one of the journalists that first blew the lid off what came to be known as "Thatchergate". Conservative forces within MI5 and MI6 put out false communist rumours about Labour prime minister Harold Wilson, to pave the way for Thatcher to be elected. This is covered in this book, and in more depth in Ramsay's book "Smear! Wilson and The Secret State". He also gives an overview of other semi-secret elite power groups, like the shadowy Bilderberger Group, The Trilateral Commision and The Council of Foreign Relations. The mother of all conspiracies, the JFK assassination, has a natural place here, along with the similar murders of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. The very nature of conspiracies and the people who believe in them are also discussed. Believers in "mega conspiracies" who spouts off about the "Illuminati" running everything (like Lyndon LaRouche) or thinks that the Queen of England, Hillary Clinton and Henry Kissinger are reptilian aliens (like David Icke) are written off as the raving loonies they probably are. The book is surprisingly comprehensive for only 100 pages. There's a lot of useful footnotes and advice on further reading. This would be a good starter book if conspiracies became a school subject. After reading this, you can delve deeper by getting the latest Lobster mag, or buying the recently released CD-ROM of the first 40 issues. The latest Lobster (#41), released in the summer of 2001, prophetically reviewed the book "Unholy Wars: Afghanistan, America and International Terrorism". The book tells the story about CIA and Pakistan working in tandem to create the Taliban regime, pumping 3 billion dollars into the region despite plenty of warnings that they were creating a monster. An exerpt from the review: "...none of them seem to have considered what to do with their Islamic army once the Soviets had left Afghanistan; and none of them seem to have anticipated the ensuing massive blowback -- heroin. terrorism, the Taliban -- they have unleashed. (My guess would be they probably think that hey, it's a price worth paying for the destruction of the Evil Empire; and anyway, who gives a fuck about a bunch of towel-heads anyway?)".

Dickheads unite!

"Philip K. Dick" by Andrew M. Butler. (£3.99, 96 pp, ISBN: 1903047293, Pocket Essentials, 2000) Sci-fi author Philip Kindred Dick is mainly known for writing the books that later became the movies "Blade Runner" and "Total Recall". He was born in 1928, and started out writing short stories in 1940s pulp magazines. He followed that with a long, continous string of novels and short story collections up to his death in 1982. His prolific literary output pushed the sci-fi genre above and beyond being just space westerns. He dealt more with the inner mind, and the possibilities of fake and parallell realities. On February 3rd 1974, he had a religious experience of some sort, in which he claimed to have been contacted by God through beings from the planet Sirius. It was already hard to tell the difference between fantasy, hallucinations and different layers of time, space and "reality" in both Dick's work and day-to-day life. The partly autobiographical novel "Valis" and the unfinished epic "The Exegesis" led many to conclude that PKD had gone mad and helplessly lost in his own schizophrenia and paranoia. Drug use and a burglary to his home (possibly done by himself) led to even stronger convictions that he was being watched and manipulated. This book mainly gives the synopsis to his books, and a short piece on his life story. It works well as an introduction to the weird world of PKD. Those already familiar with his books should look for Lawrence Sutin's excellent biography "Divine Invasions". And yes, PKD enthusiasts do call themselves Dickheads, just like fans of surf guitarist Dick Dale.

They're Coming to Take Them Away, Ha Ha...

Songs in the Key of Z -- The Curious Universe of Outsider Music by Irwin Chusid (£11.95, 275 pp, ISBN: 1901447111, Cherry Red, 2000) During many years of working as a record producer, journalist and free-form radio DJ, the american Irwin Chusid collected huge amounts of information on obscure musicians. In this book he presents some of these "outsider" artists, like the manic depressive Daniel Johnston (recently the subject of his own book "Hi, How Are You?"), who used to play all the instruments at the same time - and sing. Wesley Willis, a black, 350 pound paranoid schizophrenic, lives on the streets of Chicago and has around 400 nearly identical songs in circulation. He claims to have written 35 000, backed by his own Casio keyboard. The swedish Eilert Pilarm is an Elvis imitator, but he knows less of the lyrics than me or you, and has absolutely no sense of rhythm. Harry Partch composed music only for instruments invented and built by himself. After his death his music is rarely performed, as the instruments are very difficult to play, tune and transport. The institutionalized Jack Mudurian gulps down 10 cups of coffee and rants through 129 songs in 45 minutes. Lucia Pamela believed that she had recorded some of her songs on the moon. The Wiggin sisters in the band The Shaggs were forced into the studio by their father, long before they had learned how to play, sing or write songs. The result was the legendary album "Philosophy of the World" (1969). Strangely, this was one of ultra-perfectionist Frank Zappa's favourite albums. The mythical hermit Jandek has put out 28 albums since 1978, and nobody wants 'em. They're all filled with tuneless guitar strumming and depressing mumbling. There's also chapters on the more well known eccentrics Syd Barrett, Capt. Beefheart and Wild Man Fischer. But for the most part this book goes through uncharted territories, and is very entertaining and well written, without making too much fun of the sometimes mentally ill artists. Along with the book you should get the CD of the same title (also from Cherry Red) to hear many of the artists in the book. I think the CD is almost meaningless apart from the book, and that they should have been sold together as one package. Strongly recommended.

He sure loves boys

Jordan Chandler got 20 million dollars to not go public about his alleged sexual encounters with Michael Jackson. Parts of Chandler's alleged version of what happened still came out in Chile, in the book «Michael Jackson was My Lover -- The Secret Diary of Jordan Chandler». The author, Victor M. Gutierrez, also used court documents and interviews with other people who knew Jackson. The alleged relationship between Jackson and Chandler is described in detail. Apart from the sexual fondling, the book also claims that Jackson is cruel and inconsiderate to his animals on the "Neverland" ranch, and that he has a U-shaped prothesis to keep the rest of his nose together. If the pedophiliac stories about Jackson are true, he sure has some balls travelling around the world lecturing on children's rights. Jackson sued Gutierrez for a hundred million dollars over a comment the author made in the tabloid tv news show "Hardcopy". Gutierrez said that a video exists that shows Jackson having sex with a 13 year old boy. Protecting his sources, the author didn't show in the courtroom. The court found that there was no proof that such a video existed, and awarded Jackson 2,7 million dollars. As far as I know, there's never been a court case over the book. Amazon.com used to sell both the english and spanish editions, but it's now out of print and used copies fetch high prices.

Norsk distribusjon står selvfølgelig Hypertonia World Enterprises for.

Anus Presley

music to listen to when you're dead (review from somewhere on the internet. Order the CD from HWEB Shop) "this cd contains tracks from the now deleted anus presley cassette releases:bodybag muzak, the human gun, sexy dead child, feuerstorm cunt, and wino superstar. all these tapes were constructed in the period 1987-1991, a time when nobody had any money or talent. and if we, by some rare occasion, had some money, we always used it on beer. ah yes, those were the days." that quote, combined with a subtle g.g. allin reference and song titles like "the glorious shining path to bosnia", "dead niggers", "satanic elevator music", "nietzsche is a mommy's boy", "one million girls in refrigerators", etc. etc. is probably all you need to know about this cd. there's even a jimmy swaggart quote in the booklet, and one of these guys is dead now. starts out with a snippet from a speech that should be familiar to ramleh/consumer electronics fans and moves into some nice low-budget tape manipulation shit. second track (there are twelve listed but really only one 40-minute track so i'll stop talking about "tracks" here) is crunchy looped haters-type noise. then some weird shit. then noise. mostly short snippets... obviously just a bunch of edits from old tapes. sex. big bird. breathing and noise. real cheap noise, just total fucking crap but not boring like R&G or the haters or sudden infant or most crap. this is good crap, in a crappy way. crunchy and reminiscent of the second jazzkammer cd (because of the editing and because i think some of the sounds here appeared there as well although i don't think the bands share members... heh... members). distorted soundtracks with samples about cripples and maggots. backwards voices (or maybe that's just norwegian) and water too. badly edited samples and noise (what i easily recognize as the high pitched screechiness that comes from distorting a sound repeatedly by sending it from one cheap tape recorder to another at max level) and some kind of synthy guitar or something. low buzz and tape fast forwarding noise and samples. layered radio broadcast noise. other things, including music, distorted beyond all recognition. echoed vocals sped and slowed. more useless shit and noise. so what does this sound like, in a nutshell? kidneystone. well, actually, what kidneystone recorded, used as source material, and had the decency NOT to include in its "finished" products. there was definitely some overlap in methods. brings back memories, it does...

i had a great time hearing this

The Real Deal

In a marked contrast to Doug Yule's tragic "Final V.U." box (see posting below), these days, after years of talking and several months of delay, the 3 CD set "The Velvet Underground: Bootleg Series Volume 1: The Quine Tapes" is coming out. Review copies were mailed out and long forgotten reviews printed months ago. Robert Quine was an avid VU fan in the late 60's, and taped many of their shows. He transferred some of his best recordings from cassettes to reel-to-reel. These reel-to-reel tapes are the source for this live set of VU from 1969. There's 3 versions of Sister Ray that takes up about half the running time, and lots of other great tracks. (Quine later ended up playing guitar in Lou Reed's band in the period around "The Blue Mask".) Something to look forward to! Read more here: http://members.aol.com/olandem6/vubs.html

Yule-tide

Doug Yule has dug deep into his drawers, and managed to release the 4 CD box set «Final V.U.» in Japan. Four bootleg quality gigs from '71. '72 og '73 -- a period in Velvet Underground history that has lingered deservedly in obscurity for 30 years. Lou Reed had quit the band ages ago. Sterling Morrison stuck with it thru parts of '71, but on these recordings the only remaining member from the classic VU lineup is drummer Maureen Tucker. On half the box she's not even there, only Yule, his brother Billy and six other geezers wandering in and out, playing lukewarm hobbyband versions of Lou Reed songs. They also have the nerve to print the lyrics to "Waiting For My Man". The band also plays a selection of Doug Yule's songs, some of which later turned up on the album «Squeeze», released under the VU name in '73. In the booklet, Yule tries to justify him keeping the VU name by explaining that the band didn't have their legendary status back then, and that many bands keep on after a lot of members have been exchanged. Well, OK, but for years there were NO founding members left, and the band sounded like shit. Releasing this substandard material after all these years only adds insult to injury. Avoid at all costs.

Domestic terror

ABC News reports that a new book is out, revealing that in the early 1960s, America's top military leaders drafted plans to kill innocent people and commit acts of terrorism in U.S. cities to create public support for a war against Cuba. The documents about these plans came to light after the 1992 Oliver Stone film JFK, which examined the possibility of a conspiracy behind the assassination of President Kennedy. As public interest in the assassination swelled after JFK's release, Congress passed a law designed to increase the public's access to government records related to the assassination. So, if the military were willing to kill american citizens for some "greater good" 40 years ago, what is the level of cynicism today? We'll probably have to wait 40 years to find out... Go here

WSB -- Books and recordings roundup

Since the death of William S. Burroughs (1914 - 1997), there's been a steady stream of new material coming out. Most important and moving is the mammoth 4 CD Box "The Best of William S. Burroughs: From Giorno Poetry Systems" ('98) which collects recordings of every piece ever read publicly (and recorded). John Giorno found the best version available of every story. The booklet has many rare photos, including one of WSB's corpse. A huge collection, "Word Virus: The William S. Burroughs Reader" came out in '00. It brings together selections of Burroughs' most important and challenging work -- beginning with his very early writing (including a chapter from his and Jack Kerouac's never-before-seen collaborative novel, And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks) and following his trajectory through My Education: A Book of Dreams. The hardcover version also has a promo CD of selections from the "Best of" box set. Not yet published is the autobiography by WSB's late son Billy: "Cursed from Birth: The Short, Unhappy Life of William S. Burroughs, Jr.", edited by David Ohle. WSB's secretary James Grauerholz edited the late author's last diaries from between November 14, 1996, and August 1, 1997, and put them out in the book "Last Words: The Final Journals of William S. Burroughs" ('00). A very fragmentary and not very essential book. From the University Press of Mississippi comes "Conversations With William S. Burroughs" ('00), a collection of interviews on literature, edited by Allen Hibbard. Many WSB biographies and interview books are out there, but Graham Caveney managed to contribute something new with his "Gentleman Junkie : The Life and Legacy of William S. Burroughs"('98). This is more an analysis of WSB as a cultural phenomena. Very inventively designed, with lots of colors, drawings and photos intervowen with the text. Possibly inspired by WSB's (mostly) unpublished private scrapbook-like journals. Strongly recommended, though a little hard to read thru all that design and artwork. The UK edition bears the title "The Priest, They Called Him", and has a much cooler, black cover with b&w photo. Finally, published in '96, the year before he dies, the colour art collection "Ports of Entry: William S. Burroughs and the Arts", edited by Robert Sobieszek, brings together many of WSB's famous "shotgun paintings", made by hanging bags of paint in front of wooden boards and shooting at them.

Message from Michael Moynihan/Blood Axis:

Rites of Samhain

A brief note to convey our best wishes for this special time of year when the dead begin to stir, and their souls boldly walk among us.

We will soon send out a more detailed newsletter, including an account of the trilogy of recent Blood Axis concerts which occurred over the past two weeks in Lusitania, i.e., present-day Portugal. These were, without any doubt, some of the most special performances we have ever participated in, and consisted of an intense collaboration with our friends from Fire + Ice, In Gowan Ring, Sangre Cavallum, and Les Joyaux de la Princesse, as well as the organizers of the events themselves.

We will also announce news of recent publications of interest, and provide details on the release of the highly anticipated new CD "Absinthe: La Folie verte" -- an album length collaboration between Blood Axis and Les Joyaux de la Princesse, based entirely on the theme of the opaline intoxicant: Absinthe.

May the spirits fly and flow!

Newsletter from Adam Parfrey/Feral House:

The Feral Yell newsletter -- Fall, 2001

The Total War has begun. As the volume rises and options decrease, Feral House continues to kick against the pricks, bringing you books that counter the mass hypnosis.

The morning news talks about Anthrax and Iraq. But over a year ago "Apocalypse Culture II" brought you, among 64 others, an article titled "Bacteriological Warfare," in which microbiologist Larry Wayne Harris warns the reader of a coming germ war from Iraq. Yes, this is the same Larry Wayne Harris who was arrested by the FBI in February 1998 to great media fanfare for procuring the Anthrax bacterium, and then, a week later, was quietly released. This story includes my interview and investigation of Harris and his claims. Was Larry Harris a prophetic victim of his patriotic vigilance, or was he a neo-Nazi devising his own terror war?

[APOCALYPSE CULTURE II; edited by Adam Parfrey; 6 x 9; 458 pages; color insert; ISBN: 0-922915-57-1; $18.95.]

Speaking before the Disinfo.con 2000 event in New York City, I discussed how a prominent cult of orthodox Israelis, collaborating with wealthy American Christians, are spending enormous amounts of time and money attempting to create a special cow, every hair on its body being red. Its makers believe the creation of this Red Heifer would be a holy signal to destroy the second-holiest Islamic shrine, known to Westerners as "Dome of the Rock" – upon which the red cow would be slaughtered, burnt, and ashes scattered, enabling the long-destroyed Temple of Solomon to be rebuilt and the Jewish messiah to descend once again upon the scene.

How do Christians figure this scheme would work in their favor? That the destruction of the Islamic shrine would create such apocalyptic mayhem that the True Messiah -- a longhair known to many as "Jesus Christ" -- would come back to earth to save believers and show the Jews that they had rooted for the wrong team.

All this sounds too impossibly strange to be true. But the second Intifada began in September 2000 after Ariel Sharon, accompanied by the military and the militant Orthodoxy, appeared at the Dome of the Rock to promise its future dominion to be solely Jewish.

As Jewish and Christian extremists pimp for the apocalypse, Islamic fundamentalists, with increasing numbers and determination, are seeking an end to the West in ways that daily newspapers are ignoring and soft-peddling. The most extraordinarily documents of recent times have been unearthed and translated for Feral House’s soon-to-come book, EXTREME ISLAM: Anti-American Propaganda of Muslim Fundamentalism; edited by Adam Parfrey, foreword by Mattias Gardell. ISBN: 0-922915-78-4; 320 pages; $15. EXTREME ISLAM is slated to appear late January, 2002. Causing a huge fuss in England, and deservedly so, is Feral House’s just-off-the-press THE GATES OF JANUS: SERIAL KILLING AND ITS ANALYSIS BY THE ‘MOORS MURDERER,’ IAN BRADY. "‘The Gates of Janus’ is extraordinary," says Peter Gould of the BBC. So many people are saying this serial killer-authored tome on criminal profiling reminds them of de Sade and Schopenhauer, and Hannibal Lecter coming alive.

But then there are the nay-sayers. "Bookseller," the British version of "Publishers Weekly," prints a letter in its August 14 issue saying that the magazine must have fallen prey to a practical joke. How could a publisher that goes by the name "Feral House" print a book by Moors Murderer Ian Brady on serial killing? The letter-writer recaps the Oxford English Dictionary definition of feral: "of, pertaining to or resembling a wild animal; savage, fierce, brutal."

The writer then becomes outraged: "Controlled circulation to a small number of criminologists and other professionals might conceivably be of some social benefit, but the publishers know that they will make their money from the ‘dirty raincoat' brigade in its various guises. It would be a wonderful thing if the entire UK book trade would resolve to have nothing to do with [The Gates of Janus]."

That's right. All readers must be carefully screened and identified; only true professionals would be able to understand the social benefit of a book by Ian Brady. We mustn't allow the pervs to get their kicks by feasting their eyes on "The Gates of Janus"!

This sort of class arrogance hasn't been seen since the ‘20s when the revealing line, "For Medical Professionals Only" was appended to the works of Magnus Hirschfeld and other sex researchers, and primarily as a subliminal sales tool.

The "Bookseller" letter-writer nearly achieved his wish. The Ian Brady book was temporarily banned -- without the unbecoming sight of a bonfire. But the injunction was recently lifted, and after Feral House, in league with our European distributor, Turnaround, gets through a number of costly legal matters, the book will be allowed to be seen in England, both by professionals and the dirty raincoat brigade.

What compelled such a reaction, particularly a book that had not yet been seen, or read?

Its author, Ian Brady, with Myra Hindley, tortured and killed four teenagers and one young girl forty years ago. A recording of one of their murders is still used as a means of toughening British police against crime. The British press has obsessed about the Moors Murders for forty years, and so much so, it is unseemly. Ian Brady’s book, published by Feral House, is both a subtle revenge against a world he's grown to despise and an intelligent psychological profiling of killers he's known, or has read about.

THE GATES OF JANUS: Serial Killing and its Analysis by the 'Moors Murderer,' Ian Brady; Introduction by Colin Wilson; Foreword by Dr. Alan Keightley; Afterword by Peter Sotos o 312 pages o A Hardcover Original o ISBN: 0-922915-73-3 o $24.95.

It surprised me to see Gore Vidal rapturously quoting me in Vanity Fair magazine (September 2001) and saying elsewhere that Feral House's "The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror" by David Hoffman is the best and most complete book on the event.

For those who may not know, the Feral House OKC book Gore Vidal liked so much is the same one for which were sued for the amount of three million dollars by Oliver "Buck" Revell, the Deputy Chief of the FBI who retired in ‘94, the same Buck Revell revealed by none other than Gerald Posner in Talk magazine as being a none too charming cover-up artist.

Because the ACLU and other First Amendment foundations politely declined to support Feral House, and due to the fact that Feral House did not at the time possess adequate legal insurance or the ability to post $80,000 in legal retainer fees, we were forced to settle this suit by pulping all remaining copies of our OKC book, and keeping it out of print forever. Copies of "The Oklahoma City Bombing and the Politics of Terror" sell for $200 apiece or higher on eBay and used book dealer sites. The book’s entire content is available online at several websites including: http://www.apfn.org/apfn/hoffman.htm.

Another recent incident of terrorism has its fascinating link to material uncovered by Hoffman in his now-banned book. The "Teflon Terrorists" chapter documents how McVeigh and Terry Nichols had continual contacts with known Muslim terrorist entities up to the day of the Murrah Building blast. Nichols was married to a Filipina woman, and took trips to Cebu City, Philippines (without his wife) in late '92 and early '93 to meet with such friendly folk from the Abu Sayyaf terrorist org as Ramzi Yousef, Abdul Hakim Murad, Wali Khan Amin Shah and several others to discuss the bombing of the OKC building.

Murad was arrested in 1995 for the initial World Trade Center bombing, and after viewing the Oklahoma City bombing on a New York jail television set, he remarked to a guard that the "Liberation Army of the Philippines" -- a group connected to Abu Sayyef -- was responsible for the blast. Later, Abu Sayyaf leader Edwin Angeles corrected Murad for the record: "It was the Palestine Liberation Army and the Islamic Jihad which Murad was referring to. This army is associated with Hamas and is based in Lebanon."

Though the Revell lawsuit had its financial damage, Feral House was not entirely pushed away from printing revelations of political misconduct. Jim Redden's recent SNITCH CULTURE brings attention to the way the U.S. government creates rats of its citizens, provides toll-free numbers for high school kids to inform on those who don’t conform to the cultural mainstream, and has a vast system of digital snooping that assesses every word of our emails, phone conversations and credit card purchases. As columnists have written, our "Snitch Culture" seems more interested in digital snooping the law-abiding dissident than difficult info-gathering on actual terror structures.

SNITCH CULTURE: How Citizens are Turned into the Eyes and Ears of the State by Jim Redden o 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 o 235 pages o ISBN: 0-922915-63-6 o $14.95

"WHY BOTHER? GETTING A LIFE IN A LOCKED-DOWN LAND" is Sam Smith's meditation on how the thoughtful and creative individual can coexist among the horrors of mega-corporate culture.

Smith, a long-time Beltway journalist in the I. F. Stone model, runs The Progressive Review, the website that runs rampant over the sacred cows and charades of party politics. Says Ralph Nader about Why Bother?: "Sam Smith is an antidote to mindless speedreading. He makes you pause between paragraphs to mull over the captivating morsels he is placing in your imagination."

Intended to seize the minds of children, but composed for the amusement of those who wrote the songs, a lot of bubblegum music is soaked with sex and dirt. BUBBLEGUM MUSIC IS THE NAKED TRUTH gives the unholy lowdown on aggressive saccharinity of pop in pop culture. Do you despise The Archies? Perhaps there's more to it than generally given credence. Read the Feral House volume and see.

BUBBLEGUM MUSIC IS THE NAKED TRUTH: THE DARK HISTORY OF PREPUBESCENT POP, FROM THE BANANA SPLITS TO BRITNEY SPEARS edited by Kim Cooper and David Smay o 7 x 10 o 344 pages o illustrated o ISBN: 0-922915-69-5 o $19.95

Hardcore punk music was seen as the antidote to manufactured pop. Hard-edged apocalyptic desperation, which had its peak period from 1980 – 1986, has never before been captured in print like Steven Blush's extensively-illustrated oral history, AMERICAN HARDCORE: A TRIBAL HISTORY documents its angry and sordid ways.

Dare I say it? But to me the most interesting Feral House book in some time must be: ERIK JAN HANUSSEN: HITLER'S JEWISH CLAIRVOYANT by Mel Gordon. The author of the acclaimed VOLUPTUOUS PANIC: THE EROTIC WORLD OF WEIMAR BERLIN (now in its second printing, featuring a new cover and interior revisions) comes forward with the incredible story of an extraordinary con-man and showman who actually won a court case proving his paranormal abilities. Gordon's research uncovers new revelations about the true source of the burning of the Reichstag and a primary figure behind mass German acceptance of the Nazi party.

Biowar

Available now, directly from Vision Paperbacks:
"The Plague Makers -- The Secret World of Biological Warfare" by Wendy Barnaby. The blurb from the publisher says: "Terrifying diseases are being genetically engineered in laboratories to spread death and disease.
The Plague Makers comprehensively explores the history of the Biowar industry as well as alerting the public to the all-too real dangers of biological attack."
Sadly, this book couldn't have been published at a more "perfect" point in time. The frighteningly irresponsible meddling with chemical and biological weapons could wipe out all or most human and animal life if it spins out of control.

Other recent books from Vision:
"ACID -- The (New) Secret History of LSD" by David Black, published in a new, expanded edition this month. This controversial book explores the explosion of LSD culture in the 1960s onwards and asks whether the CIA had any involvement in making acid such a popular drug.
"Mind Controllers" by Armen Victorian. A comprehensive examination of mind control programmes in the western world in the 20th century. (published February 2001, but available by mail order now).

Collapsing new buildings

The german band Einstürzende Neubauten, active for more than 20 years, never ceases to amaze me. Their 3rd and latest compilation album, "Strategies Agains Architechture Vol. 3" is a wonderful introduction to their last ten years of work. Their latest albums are a lot more mellow and orchestrated, and has less machine noise, power tools and scrap metal beating. They still manage to sound totally unique. The compilation also works well for the die-hard fan, as alternative versions/mixes, live recordings and rare/unreleased tracks are used whenever possible. Thus it's a valuable addition to the EN collection, not just a case of paying for stuff you already have all over again. Two cd's, great digipak foldout cover (much alike their last (double) cd, "Silence Is Sexy"). 28 tracks. Strongly recommended. More info at MUTE
Also, check out their latest soundtrack offering, to a movie called "Berlin Babylon" (Our Choice Records). Mostly instrumental, with fragments of recycling from recent records.

Censored!

Book:"Censored 2001 : 25 Years of Censored News and the Top Censored Stories of the Year" by Peter Phillips, Noam Chomsky (Introduction), Tom Tomorrow (Illustrator)
Censorship is alive and well in America — and resisted every spring with the annual publication of the previous year’s top 25 censored stories. Mainstream media’s downward-spiraling standards have made Censored books a crucial tool for keeping the American public educated and informed. This year’s edition includes Ed Herman on liberals betraying their values in U.S. foreign policy, Michel Chossudovsky on propaganda, and Robin Andersen on the independent media movement. Also: an interview with Walter Cronkite; Laura Conaway and James Ridgeway's "Democracy in Chains," about the discrimination against black voters in Florida; a chapter on the history of Junk Food News by Project Censored founder Carl Jensen; and original essays by Eric Galatas, Robert A. Hackett, Edward S. Herman, Marrianne Manilov, and Norman Solomon. Also featured is “News Abuse,” a survey of the most overcovered and least newsworthy stories that clogged the airwaves. Check out the Project Censored website. No doubt, next year's edition will have quite a few entries on the ongoing war in Afghanistan.

Heavy Metal Parking Lot 15th Anniversary

Fifteen years ago, Jeff Krulik and John Heyn made the hilarious documentary video "Heavy Metal Parking Lot", filmed entirely in the teenage wasteland outside the venue of an 1986 Judas Priest concert somewhere in the USA. The follow-up, "Neil Diamond Parking Lot" wasn't all that exciting, although the horny fat, old hags in his audience does have some entertainment value. The 98 minute videotape "The Films of Jeff Krulik & Friends" also includes "Mr. Blassie Goes to Washington" (has-been wrestler with delusions of gradeur), "Ernest Borgnine on Tour" (the elderly actor travelling thru the US in a huge, custom-built bus), "King of Porn" (divorced civil servant shows his collection of 400 porn videotapes + thousand of magazines, photos, catalogues et.c. that fills his entire house (including the pantry), except a wall that is reserved for his rhythm'n'blues (78 rpm?) record collection.) Priceless video, a total must-see. Also, from public access television, there's an interview with "Blelvis", a black Elvis impersonator who knows the lyrics to all 1100 Elvis songs! He actually has the best singing voice of any Elvis impersonator I've ever heard.

Evolutionary News

We received this newsflash from our active friend Mark Gunderson in The Evolution Control Committee: Greetings, ECC fans. Long time no scribbling -- which means there is much to tell. But, sadly, so little time to tell it. We'll have to abbreviate ourselves to the most important bits:

HOLD THE PRESSES -- NEW ECC CD PRESSED

We've been talking about it so long without delivering you'd probably figured it was just an urban legend. But NO -- it EXISTS! "Plagiarhythm Nation" is the latest CD from The Evolution Control Committee. Long overdue, Plagiarhythm Nation is a 26 track, fast-paced collection of The ECC's mounting repertoire. All songs previously unreleased! Those who've seen our live shows with the Thimbletron have heard some of the tracks live, such as "I Want A Cookie", the Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner trilogy, "The Fucking Moon", and sooooo much more...
And yet, we're teasing you, yet again. Why? Because even though the CD has been pressed, we're NOT yet accepting orders for this! We simply can't keep up our in-house mail order fulfillment activities (they're in a pathetic state; it's not pretty) and will be acquiring distribution elsewhere, yet to be finalized. Future alerts will inform you how to finally get these babies. They ARE available at live shows, however...

HOLD THE VEGEMITE -- ECC IN AUSTRALIA

Such as, for instance, live shows in Australia. Yes, AUSTRALIA! If ou're one of the lucky to live in southeast Australia, you'll be able to celebrate spring (these dates were in Sept. and Oct., so I'm not listing them here. JR) with a fresh blossom of ECC plagiarhythm LIVE, with Mark Gunderson representing ECC on our custom-built instrument, The Thimbletron.

THE WEIRD LOVE MAKERS GET SPOOKY

It's been years since The Weird Love Makers' last show. The neo-exotica trio also were experts at the craft of movie soundtrack music, hitting their high point at The Wexner Center (Columbus, OH) with their soundtrack for Maya Deren's "Meshes In The Afternoon". However, they're about to get another shot at one movie they did previously -- NOSFERATU, the creepy silent horror classic that "Shadow of the Vampire" was loosely based around. It's part of Studio 35's Horror Marathon, kicking off on September 20th at noon. The Weird Love Makers perform somewhere around 4pm. Joe Bob Briggs will be in attendance too! http://www.studio35.com/horror.html

IN THE FUTURE:
A long-needed web update, and a CD release party in Columbus Ohio (and perhaps elsewhere!).

You Are Being Lied To

"You Are Being Lied To: The Disinformation Guide To Media Distortion, Historical Whitewashes And Cultural Myths" is an iconoclastic, 400-page expose of some of our most cherished cultural, political, social, and institutionally cherished errors of fact. Features "THE TRUTH ABOUT TERRORISM."

Do you believe any of the following?

· Alcoholics Anonymous is effective.
· Hackers pose a grave threat to the nation.
· Former POW Sen. John McCain wants to reveal the truth about POWs and MIAs.
· The Bible contains a hidden code.
· The Big Bang is an airtight fact.
· Thousands of species have gone extinct because of deforestation.
· George W. Bush has never commuted any prisoner’s death sentence.
· World War II was "the Good War"
· All serial killers are men.
· Licking certain toads will get you high.
· The Columbine massacre was planned and carried out by two students acting alone.
· Most terrorists are Middle Eastern.
· Humans have not yet been cloned.

Wake up! You're being lied to.

"You Are Being Lied To" acts as a battering ram against the distortions, myths, and outright lies that have been shoved down our throats by the government, the media, corporations, organized religion, the scientific establishment, and others who want to keep the truth from us.

An unprecedented group of researchers--investigative reporters, political dissidents, academics, media watchdogs, scientist-philosophers, social critics, and rogue scholars--paints a picture of a world where crucial stories are ignored or actively suppressed and the official version of events has more holes in it than Swiss cheese. A world where real dangers are downplayed and nonexistent dangers are trumpeted. In short, a world where you are being lied to.

Includes contributions from Noam Chomsky, Howard Zinn, Howard Bloom, Michael Parenti, Norman Solomon, Douglas Rushkoff, James Ridgeway, Jim Marrs, Judith Rich Harris, Tristan Taormino, Jim Hogshire, Riane Eisler, Peter Russell, and dozens of others. Over 60 articles in all!
Edited by Russ Kick, the brain behind the subcultural guidebooks "Psychotropedia" (Critical Vision) and "Outposts". Read more about this -- in every possible way -- gigantic book at http://www.disinfo.com

Jonathan Vankin's Great Big Page O' Writing

Jonathan Vankin (along with John Whalen) wrote the classic conspiracy compendium "50 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time" (later expanded to 60 and 70 Greatest...). On his webpage he introduces himself like this: "Jonathan Vankin is a full-time professional (as far as it goes) writer whose work has appeared in such allegedly reputable publications as The New York Times Magazine, Wired, Salon, L.A. Weekly and so on and so forth. But it's not really work, is it? It's FUN! So fun.
Vankin is perhaps best known for the cult classic books Conspiracies, Cover-Ups and Crimes and 70 Greatest Conspiracies of All Time as well as The Big Book of the '70s and The Big Book of Scandal from DC Comics."

Green Party Coordinator Detained at Airport; Prevented from Flying to Political Meeting

(November 2, 2001, CounterPunch Wire:)
Armed government agents grabbed Nancy Oden, Green Party USA coordinating committee member, Thursday at Bangor International Airport in Bangor Maine, as she attempted to board an American Airlines flight to Chicago.
"An official told me that my name had been flagged in the computer," a shaken Oden said. "I was targeted because the Green Party USA opposes the bombing of innocent civilians in Afghanistan."
Oden, a long-time organic farmer and peace activist in northern Maine, was ordered away from the plane. Military personnel with automatic weapons surrounded Oden and instructed all airlines to deny her passage on any flight.
"I was told that the airport was closed to me until further notice and that my ticket would not be refunded," Oden said.
Oden is scheduled to speak in Chicago Friday night on a panel concerning pesticides as weapons of war. She had helped to coordinate the Green Party USA's antiwar efforts these past few months, and was to report on these to The Greens national committee. "Not only did they stop me at the airport but some mysterious party had called the hotel and cancelled my reservation," Oden said.
The Greens National Committee -- the governing body of the Green Party USA -- is meeting in Chicago Nov. 2-4 to hammer out the details of national campaigns against bio-chemical warfare, the spraying of toxic pesticides, genetic engineering, and the Party's involvement in the burgeoning peace movement.
"I am shocked that US military prevented one of our prominent Green Party members from attending the meeting in Chicago," said Elizabeth Fattah, a GPUSA representative from Pennsylvania who drove to Chicago. "I am outraged at the way the Bill of Rights is being trampled upon."
Chicago Green activist Lionel Trepanier concluded, "The attack on the right of association of an opposition political party is chilling. The harassment of peace activists is reprehensible."

It must be art ...

... because Taschen's 608 page hardcore porn book "The Christy Report" weighs so much that you couldn't possibly read it with one hand. And it's got hard covers around all that other hard stuff. As they claim, it'll teach you "the ins and outs of XXX-rated culture". Publisher, film producer, and archivist Kim Christy has put together an impressive collection of 20th-century smut. Compiled from extensive private collections. Images tracing the evolution of porn as we know it, from beginnings in early photography, illustration, and film, through the glory days of the 70s porn explosion, up to today's expanded digital-age market. A history book unlike any you ever had in school, The Christy Report is more than eye candy, it's also educational (wink, wink)!
Kim Christy spent several years dancing and performing in night clubs before working for the Eros Publishing Company on such titles as Eros, Mode Avantgarde, Hooker and Exposé. Christy has since produced and directed several feature films, including "Sulka's Wedding" (transsexual classic), "Squalor Motel" and "Corrupt Desires". Also includes text by "Leg Show" editor Dian Hanson and others.
